I read all of the negative reviews and just laugh ... My family and I have been eating here ever since it opened. Purple Onion is what it is - a solid, middle of the road "Greek" restaurant, almost identical to the hundreds of others you find in Chicago and suburbs. Is it gourmet? No! Does it have solid breakfasts, lunches and dinners? Heck yes! Service is friendly and professional, with a lot of the ladies having been there forever. They know their business and will keep your coffee cup full. Anybody who orders steak here and expects Gibson's is just stupid. You order the stuff that you know turns over quickly and you walk out with a solid meal at a reasonable price.

While I am in Orland Park shopping I always take 143rd street westbound from La Grange Rd as it leads me to the I-355 expressway. Call it the scenic route but I love to look at the farm land country setting on my way home. For the past few months I've driven by the Purple Onion Restaurant hundreds of times. There are plenty of dining options on this block on my route home like beef, burger and pizza places. However I was in the sit down have a server wait on me mood. Now I knew exactly what I was getting myself into as I previously read the horrible yelp reviews from my phone. As a matter of fact I was reading all of them as I sat in my booth waiting to be served on. I would agree the service could use a refresher course in hospitality and re-training staff to know the soups of the day would be helpful. You can't blame a slow business for why servers become lazy. I just think management may have lost a bit of passion for the business which reflects onto their staff. Although everyone was friendly the dining vibe seem to need a major pick me up. I have no complaints on my Chicken Melt meal with soup. It was delicious. However the coffee refills were next to none. My server was a chatty Kathy with other people leaving me to wonder if she even really wanted to be at work. I felt sorry for the hostess and she appeared to be really tested and put through the customer service ringer. I made it appoint to speak with her, I wanted to be a friendly voice to her many complaints she most likely was dealing with on the regular. She was nice to me and I wanted to end my dining experience on a good note.

Worst restaurant I've ever been too. Beside the poor quality of food this was the worst service I have ever encountered. Who decides this waitress is qualified to do the job ??? Unreal !!

The Service was a bit slow from our server, but it definitely wasn't terrible. Staff was friendly and if I wanted fast I would go to McDonalds or Wendy's. I had the spaghetti with Marinara sauce, my wife had a Reuben sandwich. Both were tasty and plentiful, no complaints from either of us. We eat out at least three times a week, and find the Purple Onion to be up to par. I read some of the other reviews here, all I can say is I've eaten here at least five times in 2014 and I always find it a good value. Perhaps the poor reviews need to be realistic on service time expected, and relax and enjoy the dining experience and don't be in a rush.

Went for breakfast on a Sunday. Service was slow, the food was plentiful but mediocre. Pretty sure our forgotten English muffin was microwaved. There are better options nearby

HORRIBLE!!! Rude owners and poor service! Don't say I didn't warn you!! Only gave one star because app wouldn't allow me to give zero...

Good food. Amazing soup. Wait staff is attentive and friendly. Portion sizes are very big. Its a typical greasy spoon restaurant. If you are looking for a good inexpensive meal I definitely recommend The Purple Onion

I like my food like I like my women......rubbery and flavorless. The Purple Onion has never been a bastion of good food. But I got dragged here regardless. At first I was hopeful, the menu looked new and the pictures actually made me want to try things. It worked out that I was with a decent group and got to try a few thing on the menu. The best thing we got was OK. There was a garlic chicken pasta dish that sounded like awesomeness that failed most epic. There was no garlic flavor.....How in the world does a dish with garlic in the name not have any garlic flavor?!?! Someone also got a gourmet beef pesto sandwich that sounded good and then disappointed. The beef was crazy dry and there was minimal pesto. But hey, the roasted red pepper was good. This place is not that good, but on the plus side it never made me sick.

BAD!!! This is the blandest, no flavor Greek restaurant I have ever been to. I have gone there grudgingly, a half dozen times, and could not find any thing that tasted any better than mediocre. Even their bacon lacks flavor. I have never had a rude wait staff, or a rude hostess, its just the idea that the money you pay for food, you would be better off eating take out bag.

There aren't many restaurants in Homer Glen,IL. There aren't many places to eat breakfast in Homer Glen. Purple Onion was about the only place serving breakfast until Blueberry Hill opened up on Bell Road. I couldn't wait until Purple Onion had some competition. They are just a regular diner who serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is truck- stop food. Fill your belly and leave. As soon as Blueberry Hill opened,we tried their breakfast and lunch and we're happy with the food and service. The coffee is good and sometimes you can find coupons for half off with the purchase of two meals. The parking lot is always full and hopefully took business away from Purple Onion.

WHY do I keep thinking this place will be good? What a crapfest! 1 star only because they do have a semi-decent staff. The food simply sucks. I love Greek run diners, but this one is run by what must be the cheapest SOB this side of the Mississippi. You can't cut corners, trust me, it will show...I've tried breakfast (gawd-awful) and I've tried lunch (stale ass bread for sandwiches) and I can only assume the local "blue hairs" are keeping this place open because it's all that's around, and their taste buds and vision left them years ago. Like the owner of this place. I gave the Purple Onion my last piece of business ever, never again.
(1)Tom A.
Average breakfast place. Works in a pinch... been here a million times it seems. Nothing special really.
(2)Jillian H.
Been going here for more than 20 years. Beef delight sandwich awesome
(5)Liz K.
Just a regular old diner...nothing special. I really thought it would be too because usually it seems like there are a lot of cars in the parking lot. Their coffee is NOT good...I am being generous by giving it two stars really.

I went here once, regret it. I don't mean to insult but I just really did not enjoy this place. poor service and almost inedible food. Way too large of a menu, it's almost impossible to decide. I ended up ordering fish and chips and it was not enjoyable. I drive by this place often and see the back door of the restaurant by the kitchen completely open where any kind of bug or critter would be able to get in. The waitresses and cooks are sometimes out there smoking and sitting down. Seems unsanitary. They don't even have a screen door! just completely open. If i were you, I would stay away.

Don't say I didn't warn you. I've no one to blame but myself. When the decision was made I steered in the Purple Onion's direction because "pancake houses always have good coffee." I should have known - a restaurant with such a name - ONion - is only asking for trouble. At first glance it appears to be a lovely, clean restaurant with very nice staff. And truly, they shoult at least get 2 stars from me because the staff was nice. But that will not save the restaurant from the bigger problem. The food. We had scrambled eggs, hash browns, turkey sausage, bacon, crepes with blueberries, corn beef hash and pancakes at our table. We also had coffee and juice. As we waited I decided to visit the lovely bathroom (er, letrine). It looked like they tried. Really tried to keep it clean - look! there are mop remnants stuck underneath the door! But hey - if out of 3 or 4 bathrooms all of them have floating things and wet seats - there isn't much to choose from. The paper towel machine itself was so filthy sticky moldy that even my elbow was afraid to push down on the lever. That should have been my clue to leave the restaurant - but told myself if I saw just one roach, I would leave. Perhaps they all died. Help me. I've just tasted what could be the world's worst coffee! What was I thinking!? The grainy-ness and it's inability to lighten up after almost 4 creams should have clued me. But that is not the worst. I excitedly tried a tiny bite of the turkey sausage. OMG - it tasted as though it had been frozen and re frozen and then it hung out in the freezer for years only to have captured that old-smell. Not only did it taste bad, it smelled bad. Same problem with the eggs, smell and weird aftertaste. What's going on here? The ONLY things we ended up eating were part of the crepes and the juice (which tasted as if kept in a plastic gallon jug). Oh Purple Onion. I know you are trying. Please try harder. The waitress came back asking if we wanted doggie bags. We all said "NO" in a resounding tone - and she probably was aware we really, really meant it. This little doggie did not take anything home with him. Other than a slight tummy ache. Next!

I still hate this place and will tell everyone to stay away from here like it was the plague...

Microwave food. Stay away. This place is an insult to Homer Glen. I like a good "diner", but this is not one of them.
(1)Robert S.
I generally love diners. I do not love this diner. The food is pretty terrible and has been for about 20 years. Every time i drive by i wonder how in the hell it has remained open.
(2)Rich R.
Never fails to disappoint. The joint was totally empty save us, and the waitress never offered to refill our coffee or to check if we needed anything. Food always mediocre and service borders somewhere between neglectful and grumpy.
(1)Amy J.
The food is just not good. I live right by this restaurant and have probably been here twice in 17 years.
(1)J B.
Been to the Purple Onion a couple of times in the past. Truth be told food is not that good. I had the roast pork with dressing and quite honestly it is terrible. I thought I had just gotten a bad plate so I ordered it again a second time a few months later. Nope, it is bad, worst I ever had hands down. Just doesn't taste right. On another occasion I found a long hair in my food...an open faced hot turkey sandwich. Yes, I suppose this happens occasionally but I told the manager and he did not do anything about it! He just looked surprised, had no idea what to say, acted dumb and pretty much had an oh well attitude. On the plus side the dinner salads are large and loaded with dressing, and the rolls are good too.

Worse restaurant; steak was over cooked, over priced. Clam chowder had no clams and tasted like corn starch. The waitress never came back to our tnd there was about 5 tables occupied. Food seemed microwaved. My husband complained in front of other customers and all they said was are you going to leave a tip. Of we did not. Will never go there again. I suppose they never review Yelp because the bad reviews keep getting posted..so there will be no improvement.
